PLANTIN, Christophe - Signed autograph letter to "mon frere Poiret", i
Nice French document on paper, c. 8,5 x 22 cm, signed “vostre frere C. Plantin”, with address on verso. Concerning "mon frere Porret" : "Plantin’s father was a footman. Fleeing from the plague that had decimated his household - and, as far as can be made out from the context, had carried off Plantin’s mother - he made his way to Lyon with his only surviving child and there entered the service of Claude Porret, the aged obedientiary of the church of Saint-Just, whom Jean Plantin had already served at the university ... Pierre Porret was a nephew of this ‘Claude’ Porret, in whose house he came to know Plantin and to love him as a brother.” Plantin and his "brother" Pierre Porret were also members of the anabatist sect "The Family of Love". Later, Pierre became the important businessrelation of Plantin in Paris. Porret and Plantin even are alledged to have stolen possessions of a Paris jeweller who had intended to give his belongings to "The Family of Love" (Voet, Golden Compasses, I p. 8, 39; II p. 612). Joined : [PLANTIN, Christophe] – Autograph document on financial transactions with Pierre Porret (Paris) and Louis Perez ‘depuis octobre 1581’. [Antwerp, 1582?]. In good condition. French document on paper, c. 13,5 x 21 cm. Perhaps two notes taken by Plantin for his accounts? Ref. Not in Correspondance de Plantin, nor in the Supplément.
