PLACE, Francis (1771-1854). Illustrations and Proofs of the Principle of Population: including an Examination of the Proposed Remedies of Mr. Malthus, and a Reply to the Objections of Mr. Godwin and Others . London: Longman [and others], 1822. 8° (212 x 126mm.) Modern cloth-backed boards. FIRST EDITION of the radical reformer and autodidact's only book (the greater part of his writing consisted of tracts, newspaper articles and unpublished letters and manuscripts) which contains some of his best work. It is, in essence, a reply to Godwin's Enquiry and his references to Godwin are distinctly inimical. Kress C.943; Goldsmith 23493.
