Pietro Antonio Pacifico
Breve descrizzione corografica del Peloponneso o' Morea. Venice: Domenico Lovisa 1704
Second edition, enlarged, 4to (205 x 150mm.), woodcut initials, deckle edges contemporary carta rustica with slightly later calf-backing, without map as often (see note), L1 with piece torn away touching text, several leaves browned, recent inventory label on cover
“The first edition appeared in 1700 without the map. The map is extremely rare and possibly was printed separately from the book, as only one of the six other copies of this work which we have examined contains the map” (Blackmer).
This work was published in the wake of the Morean War (1684-1699), which saw Venice conquer the Morea peninsula, which had previously been under the control of the Ottoman Empire.
LITERATURE:Blackmer 1233; Weber II, 755
PROVENANCE:Loverdos Collection, gilt bookplate and library stamp to rear paste-down
