Pierre-Joseph Redout (1759-1840) [ Douze Bouquets Dessins et composs par P.J.Redout lithographis par A. Prvost et Pointel du Portail. Paris & New York: C.Schroth or Bailly Ward & Co., n.d. but 1835]. 5 original parts (?all published), large 4 (359 x 275mm). Without title or text. 54 hand-coloured lithographic plates only (of 60) after Redout, by Prvost (8) or Pointel de Portail (46), all printed by Villain and with 'C. S.'[chroth] blindstamp in lower margin. (Lacking plate nos.19, 20, 40, 50, 57 and 58, plates 18 and 22 with paper browned, slight smudging to colour of plate 36, slight spotting to 9 plates.) Unbound as issued in original oatmeal-coloured wrappers, lithographed title on recto of upper wrapper, list of works available from Schroth on verso (parts 1 and 2 with tears to upper cover or backstrip, small marginal tears to parts 3-5). A FINE SERIES OF MIXED BOUQUETS, A MAJOR WORK FROM REDOUT UNRECORDED IN THE STANDARD BIBLIOGRAPHIES. The lists on the inside of the wrappers give an indication of the publisher's intentions for this work. Parts (or 'Cahiers') 1 and 2 note 'Un cahier de 12 bouquets (Cette Collection sera compose de 6 8 cahiers)', but for reasons that are unclear from part 3 onwards this is altered to '3 cahiers de 12 bouquets (chaque cahier) les 4 e et 5 e cahiers paraitront la fin de 1835'. Little information as available on lithographs of Redout's work. The plates were produced either late in the artist's career (as here) or after his death. Schroth must now figure prominently as the publisher of most of the lithograph plates produced during the 1830s, and the implication of the title of the present work is that Redout produced a series of original compositions for publication as lithographs. Given Redout's precarious financial position, it would not be surprising to find that he had been commissioned by Schroth, what is certain is that the present images are not copies of earlier prints. Until the discovery of the present work a maximum of 30 lithographs after Redout published by Schroth were recorded: 12 plates (folio, hand-coloured, undated), each plate showing various members of a single genera (these rooms, 11 November 1998); 6 plates (4to, uncoloured, 1835), titled Receuil de six beaux bouquets (Hunt Redoutana 46; Great Flower Books [1990] p.129); 12 plates (4to, coloured or uncoloured, circa 1835), titled Reunion de Douze Planches de Fleurs (Hunt Redoutana 47; Great Flower Books [1990] p.129). In addition a series of 12 plates (folio, hand-coloured, no date) titled Les Mois is also recorded ( Great Flower Books [1990] p.129. The present work is an important addition to Redout's canon of work, and a fine example of the work of this master of the botanical illustration. (5)
