Title-page printed in red and black with engraved vignette. Additional engraved title-page from the French edition of 1764. Engraved portrait of Piazzetta in text, decorative head- and tail-pieces, engraved figural initials and 48 engraved plates of 24 subjects, comprising 24 by Franceso Bartolozzi in outline with cross-hatching and 24 by Marco Pitteri with roulette work. (Some occasional pale spotting.) Contemporary vellum-backed boards (a bit rubbed). Provenance : Louisa Prat (name in ink on front cover). FIRST EDITION of Piazzetta's famous drawing manual, and one of the most attractive works of the great period of Venetian illustrated books. The self-portrait, dated 1738, is the only surviving etching by Piazzetta himself. The preliminaries include a biography of the artist by his friend and admirer, the publisher Albrizzi. This edition was soon followed by the more common and inferior French edition of 1764. Cicognara 345.
