Beschreibung:

Hand-colored lithograph, 17 x 22.75 in. Phrenological Tree and Chart, Exhibiting the Classification and Location of the Mental Faculties. Clinton Hall, New York: Lorenzo N. Fowler, 1840. With large, labeled tree at center surrounded by four detailed diagrams. Lorenzo Niles Fowler and his brother Orson were considered eminent phrenologists during the 19th century. They published numerous books focusing on applying phrenology to daily life. The brothers rose to prominence as the heads of the Phrenological Institute in New York City, where Lorenzo performed phrenological readings on clients. The Fowlers also trained the next generation of phrenologists. During their rise in popularity, it became fashionable to have a reading done by the famous Fowler brothers, and many notable personalities had their heads examined, including Clara Barton, Julia Ward Howe, and Hiram Powers Additionally, the brothers managed a large publishing house, which produced phrenological works, such as the Phrenological Journal, written by the Fowlers among others. The Fowlers also considered themselves as contributors to a larger progressive movement that emphasized rational reform and therefore published a large collection of titles similar to "self-help" books, including books on homeopathy, hydropathy, poetry, photography, and early feminism. Information obtained from the article, "Snaring the Fowler: Mark Twain Debunks Phrenology," by Delano José Lopez, Skeptical Inquirer, Volume 26.1, January / February 2002. https://www.csicop.org/si/show/snaring_the_fowler_mark_twain_debunks_phrenology Provenance: Property from the Inventory of Rex Stark Condition: Vertical central fold. Some water staining and soiling along right and left portions of print. With few short tears along perimeter.
