Lot of 19 photographs, featuring 2 photographs of Ada Archer (Mrs. Daniel Vincent Jones), born March 16, 1860, including cabinet card of Ada in American Indian dress, cropped and placed in studio background, Muscogee, Indian Territory, plus larger 6 x 8.25 in. studio portrait on 8 x 10 in. mount of Ada as Mrs. Daniel Vincent Jones, Pyror Creek, Indian Territory. This larger portrait has suffered some damage, including horizontal and vertical tears that have been repaired with scotch tape. Photograph, 9.75 x 7.5 in., on 12 x 10 in. mount showing a group of prominent Indian Territory women identified in pencil on verso. The portrait includes the female faculty of the Cherokee Female Seminary at Tahlequah, including: [1] second assistant, Minta Foreman, the only surviving child of Rev. Stephen Foreman, a Cherokee Presbyterian minister who acted as a delegate who protested the removal treaty of New Echota in 1836, was an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the Cherokee Nation, held offices as executive council member and clerk of the Cherokee National Senate, and was the Cherokee Nation's first superintendent of education; [2] Music teacher, Cherrie Adair, a descendant of William Penn Adair, a Cherokee leader and Confederate colonel of the First Regiment of Cherokee Mounted Volunteers and organized the Second Cherokee Mounted Volunteers. [3] Jennie Martin, a Howard-Payne College in Fayette, MO and assistant to superintendent Dr. Charles McClelland Ross at the seminary. [4] music teacher, Carlotta Archer, a pioneering woman of Cherokee descent whose family traveled to Mayes County, OK before the Indian Removal Act. She was well educated and graduated from the Cherokee Female Seminary at Tahlequah and Monticello Seminary for girls at Godfrey, Illinois. She taught music at several schools including what is now the University of Tulsa and the female seminary at Tahlequah. She was the only woman to hold a position on the Board of Education of the Cherokee Nation. [5] Lillian Alexander, a former student and first assistant in the school. [6] principal, Etta Rider, who served as superintendent of Ringgold County, Iowa before taking control of the seminary school. [7] superintendent, Mrs. E.W. Buffington. 8 miscellaneous photos of Carlotta Archer, ranging from a cabinet photograph to early 20th century portraits. 7 miscellaneous photos of Josephine Ross and family, plus 9.5 x 11 in. charcoal sketch of Josephine and Child. Ross was another well-known Indian Territory resident. Condition: Most of the images are in very good condition with some toning, the identified photograph has some damage to the mount.
