Approx. 16 x 20 in. framed to 20 x 24 in. in deep frame. There are at least three bipointed dirigibles visible in the photograph. These appear to be very similar to Jules Henri Giffard's early design composed of a non-rigid cigar-shaped bag with a small steam engine and propeller. The dirigibles in this photo have "balloons" covered with netting, which attaches to a long frame below. In the airborne vessel there is a man on that metal catwalk. There is a propeller on the front of the "catwalk" and a vertical fin at the back. Two more dirigibles are on the ground. A few signs are visible in the background; the only one that can be read is "Post Dispatch Headquarters." There are hundreds of people in the background behind fencing and dozens of men are scattered around the field. Along the center of the field are men in uniform, both military and police. This is thought to be Lakehurst Naval Air station, at least a couple decades before the famous airship accident there. These airships seem to have been popular around the turn of the century. One can find pictures of them at various fairs, often on postcards - Chester County (PA), Great Cambridge Fair (1909), Wildwood (NJ, 1906), Brockton Fair (MA), Syracuse (NY), Otsego Co. (NY), Worcester (MA, 1911).
