Lot of 2, including: Photograph, 8.5 x 7.25 in., on slightly larger mount showing a group identified as the Dawes Commission, no studio mark or period identification. Ca 1900. Accompanied by roll/log book from the Indian Territory for Methodist Episcopal Church, for Salina Charge, Cherokee District, Indian Mission. Partially printed log book: The Complete Quarterly Conference Record Book Embracing a Period of Four Years. Questions Arranged According to Revisions Made in the Discipline by the General Conference of 1894. Nashville (TN): Publishing House of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, 1895. This covers 1895-96, First Quarter, to 1898-99, Fourth Quarter. Each Conference has a roll of members present - often only two or three. There are often members "dismissed by certificate." There are occasionally (annual?) lists of members at Catchertown, Elm Springs, Pegg's Prairie, Long Prairie, and Salina. There were few "peripherals" at this mission. One of the Supplements ("A") for the Sept. 5, 1896 Conference is typical: "Dear Brethren: We have no S.S. [Sunday School] at present. No house on the work where a School could be had. We sincerely regret this and trust that in the near future houses suitable for S.S. and other purposes may be erected. We see no prospects for organizing an Epworth League now. There are no suitable leaders on the work. We do not think the material is here for an Epworth League. We regret this and hope it will not always be thus. H.T. Lyles, P.E. [Presiding Elder]" Another supplement ("C") to this report contains another common complaint: "In regard to the great and important work of missions we are greatly behind. There is a want of interest in the people and a want of means with which to work. The work might be extended East of this Charge, especially among the full-blood Cherokees if means could be had to pay an interpreter and support a preacher. But nothing is doing now." December 1896 brought a new PC, with a new viewpoint: "At least 50% of the members pray in public and otherwise evidence their desire of salvation. We have about 25 Family altars, have a prayer meeting at one point holds semiweekly prayer meetings. In short we hope to have a prosperous year by the help of him who has promised to never leave us or forsake us. J.M. Russell P.C." An interesting list of what seems to be an ever-changing membership in this congregation. Names that appear fairly regularly include: W.T. Adair, M.A. (& Mrs.) Ross, H.T. Lyles, Ziba Fought, D.F. Estes, J.M. Russell, W.A. West, H.C. Ross, Lewin Ross, Roland Qualls. Condition: Significant wear to photograph, including crease throughout top portion, scratches and nicks in surface of print. Book missing front cover. Extensive insect and possibly rodent damage, but most does not impact text. Many pages loose. (A few blank pages appear to have been torn out - why waste paper?)
