He wears a Model 1874 jacket, with a buffalo fur winter cap and gauntlets. He also wears a sword belt and rig, a cartridge belt, and leans on a M1873 Winchester lever action rifle. The two tintypes were taken at the same time, both before a rough backdrop. In one the Sergeant wears a kepi with infantry insignia pins indicated he was a member of Company E, of the 4th U.S. In the other, he holds his kepi on his knee. After the Civil War, the 4th saw duty at Fort Laramie and were engaged several times, most notably at the Battle of the Rosebud with Crook. Condition: Cdv with as-made negative flaw, others fine.
