PHILLIPS, JOHN CAMPBELL Group of drawings of African American interest , circa 1892, comprising three fine ink studies each depicting two young African American men, each signed and two dated, with pencilled captions, these measuring approximately 15 x 15 inches (38 x 38 cm); and one larger pencil drawing on board depicting a preacher and subject, approximately 20 x 25 inches (50 x 53 cm). Each with some measure of toning or losses, the preacher scene heavily worn; Together with a group of eleven examples of Phillips' commercial illustration work, being large original pencil or ink drawings on board of paper measuring approximately 25 x 20 inches (50 x 53 cm), some pieced together, most signed. These heavily worn with losses, the lot sold with all faults. John Campbell Phillips is best known for his 1899 book Plantation Sketches which depicted the southern life of African Americans after the Civil War. The drawings in that volume are similar to those offered here. C
