(Leaf c torn diagonally across and repaired, marginal tears on e5, n4, t8, and N5 sometimes crossing marginal flourishes, and a few other, some minor marginal soiling and staining.) Contemporary German blind-tooled pigskin over boards, brass clasps and catches (front joint split near top, but cords sound). Provenance : foliated throughout in a contemporary hand; acquired from Florimond Tulkens, 1971. The third edition of Pfintzing's poem, barely distinguishable from the second, which was also published in 1519, and both line-by-line reprints of the first edition, printed by Schönsperger in 1517. It is printed with the same distinctive type, which was created specifically for this work. The type was designed by Vincenz Röckner, the emperor's court secretary, and the woodcuts, based on preliminary drawings approved by Maximilian himself, are the work of the great woodcut artists, Beck, Schäufelein, Burgkmair, and others. A literary epic, sponsored by Emperor Maximilian (represented in the poem by the hero Tewrdannck) to celebrate his heroic feats in overcoming the difficulties of his journey to win his bride, Mary of Burgundy (die Künigin Ernreich in the poem). Maximilian was largely responsible for writing the poem, and had made the first drafts in 1505-08. Pfintzing, the emperor's private secretary, oversaw completion of the poem and served as general editor. This copy corresponds with Panzer B, with two exceptions: b3 as Panzer A, and e8 which appears to correspond with neither, and may be a variant state ("loben"). A TALL COPY IN A CONTEMPORARY BINDING.
