Peyssonnel C., "Observations historiques et geographiques sur les peuples barbares qui ont habite les bords du Danube et du Pont EuxinVoyage a Magnesie, a Thyatire, a Sardes", Paris 1765. First edition, large 4to 27x20cm, contemporary full leather rubbed, spine very richly gilt, head of spine damaged, complete: frontis, title in red and black, 358p., 4 folded maps, 8 plates of views, one folded plate of inscriptions, important, fortunately marginal, worming in several places, one map (Ionia) with some loss inside printed area and two ink spots, light scattered browning and spotting, overall in almost good condition. Peyssonnel was for 25 years French consul in several places in the Levant. Initially in the Black sea, after in Kriti and Smyrna. This fine account deals with the evolution of the Black sea area populations since the ancient times up to the 18th century. It includes a separate, very precious, early travel account of the author from Smyrna in the interior of Anatolia when he was consul there. His information for the people leaving around the Black sea during early 18th century is extremely valuable, as the access of all foreigners to this was denied by the Ottomans up to the very late 18th century. The publication includes three maps of Black sea areas (and one of Ionia) originally drawn by the author which are the most accurate for their time. Atabey 949, not in Blackmer. Rare
