PETRARCA, Francesco. Li sonetti, canzone, triumphi . Venice: Gregorio de Gregorii, May 1519. Part one (of two) only, 4 o (213 x 147 mm). Italic type. Title with elaborate contemporary ornamental architectural illumination painted en camaïeu d'or , gold on brown, by Benedetto Bordon the text within a cartouche, above a grotesque head flanked by dolphins with swags of flowers and fruit suspended from their mouths, below a seated cherub flanked by two satyrs, two theatrical masks at his feet and at foot a small shield incorporating the crossed keys of St. Peter, fleurs-de-lys and the Medici balls. One full-page woodcut finely colored and heightened with gold and bronzed border, apparently also illuminated by Bordon. 19th-century diced calf (hinges repaired). Provenance : 20 August 1558 inscription on verso of last leaf with monogram "CB"; acquired from Marlborough Rare Books, 1984. A SUPERBLY ILLUMINATED COPY BY BENEDETTO BORDON (ca 1450/60 - ca 1530), THE PADUAN MINIATURIST AND ONE OF THE GREATEST, AND LAST, VENETIAN BOOK ILLUMINATORS. The two decorated pages show affinities to the ornaments of one of his last works, the Evangelium of ca 1523-25 in the Chester Beatty Library. Born in Padua, Bordon worked there until the early 1500s and then moved to Venice, but maintained close links with his native city. Bordon also illuminated a copy of Il Petrarca, con l'espositione d'Alessandro Vellutello (Venice, 1528) for Cardinal Bembo, whose celebrated library in Padua incorporated his father's equally rich collection from Venice. Though still debated, Bordon is now widely considered the artist responsible for the renowned woodcuts in the Aldine 1499 edition of Colonna's Hypnerotomachia Poliphili (see lot 16). The small shield at the foot of the title-page suggests that this copy may have been presented to Leo X (1513-1522), the first Medici Pope. I Triumphi moralissimi comprised the second part of this edition. Adams P-793; Essling 88; Sander 5621.
