Read more Peter Richard Atkinson Lot 87 - 'Naval Frigate at the Entrance to Cork Harbour (1863)' Estimate: €1,000 - €1,500 This watercolour, one of several maritime views painted by Richard Peterson Atkinson in the last weeks of 1863, shows a three-masted barque, caught in choppy seas at the entrance to Cork Harbour, between fort Camden and the lighthouse at Roches Point. A naval vessel, the barque flies the red ensign and carries thirty-four guns. In the distance, a squadron of naval vessels approaches, sailing in line and heeling slightly in the easterly wind. Evidently the lead ship of the squadron, the barque has reached the open sea and is turning eastward. The sails on its foremast are pressed against the mast, while those on the main and mizzen masts are limp. At the top of the mainmast, two signal flags read 'T' and 'P'. To the right a small pilot vessel has turned and is heading back into the harbour. Depending on conditions of wind and sea, sailing conditions at the entrance to Cork Harbour can be difficult, particularly at ebb tides.
