Peter Lombard's Sentences Anton Koberger 1481 PETRUS LOMBARDUS (1096-1160). Sententiarum libri IV. Nuremberg: Anton Koberger 10 May 1481. First Koberger edition of the essential scholastic school text, fourth overall. Peter Lombard’s Sentences, composed while he was teaching in Paris, combine Biblical texts with quotations from the Church Fathers and earlier medieval theologians. For centuries it remained a standard textbook of theology, and the most commented-upon work after the Bible. H 10188*; BMC II 420; BSB-Ink P-378; Bod-inc P-224; Goff P-481; ISTC ip00481000. Chancery folio (307 x 201mm). 170 leaves. Large historiated initial on gold ground, smaller red and blue initials, red capital strokes and paragraph marks (dampstaining, occasional spots and staining, scattered wormholes, first blank with repairs at inner and lower margins). Modern quarter calf over older wooden boards, leather index tabs, partial pastedowns reused from vellum manuscript with elaborate penwork initials (lacking catchplates and straps, some worming). Provenance: some marginalia – Michael Prunner (gift inscription dated 1519 on first leaf to:) – Dominikanerkloster Retz (several inscriptions) – stamp of religious house with name obliterated.
