Collation: [a 1 0 b-h 8] i l-n 8 o p 6 (a1r blank, a1v prefatory letter of Calphurnius, a2r Rudimenta grammatices [dedicated to] Pyrrhus Perottus, p6r colophon, p6v ?blank). 110 leaves. 36 lines. Type: 1: 114R; 114 Gk. Initial spaces, with guide-letters, flourished initials in red on a2r and l2v. Indented text. (a1 and p6 laid down on recto and verso respectively, quires e-i and l1 close cut and extended at margins, d5 torn across the page, light worming of early quires, hole causing loss to one line of text on a2, holes also affecting d2, e7-8, g4, g7 and i2, i6 and i8 holed and stained, m2 with larger hole at margin, d8v browned.) 18th-century vellum over pasteboard, marbled endpapers (lightly soiled). Provenance : early annotations (often washed or rubbed away) -- [?]Ryland, 1835 (signature on a1r) -- G.H. Crowther, Warrington (bookseller's label). Fifth edition of Perottus's enduringly popular grammar, based on Pannartz's 1474 edition, the first having been printed by Sweynheym and Pannartz in Rome, 19 March 1473. BMC notes that the same watermarks are found in both the signed and unsigned quires, the partial use of signatures suggesting that the book 'may belong to December, 1474 (or possibly to January, 1475)'.
