.75 caliber smoothbore, 59.5" round barrel with engraved bands, even dark patina, English proof marks, "French" style percussion conversion with a nipple lug, a lug added near the muzzle and the stock cut back to accommodate a socket bayonet, engraved lockplate with percussion hammer, maker marked "IACOB MOENEN / AMSTERDAM." Maple stock has high relief carving, brass furniture includes an open work side plate and triggerguard with acorn finial, initials "BE" with the B backwards inscribed on the obverse buttstock, the reverse is carved with a military unit designation "N61 I." Jacob Moenen was a well know Dutch gunsmith active in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. An interesting re-purposing of a sporting firearm to military use, possibly during the Revolution, then back to civilian use in the 19th century. Formerly in the Guthman collection. Provenance: Ex Bill Guthman Condition: Good; bore dark with moderate pitting, has a small hole next to the front sight blade, heavy pitting around the nipple, nipple flattened, one lock screw lacking, minor water stain on the reverse buttstock and repaired wood chipping on the heel.
