PENNANT, Thomas (1726-1798). Arctic Zoology. London: Henry Hughs, 1784-87. The first edition, complete with the important supplement. Pennant's work describes not only the Arctic but the northern part of North America and Alaska, northern Scandinavia, and northern Asia. The plates were engraved by P. Mazell after George Stubbs Moses Griffiths, P. Brown and others. Unable to travel to Northern regions himself, Pennant relied on specimens as well as correspondence with other scholars, primarily Peter Simon Pallas, Professor of Natural History in the service of Catherine the Great. Arctic Bib. 13291; Lada-Mocarski 38; Sabin 59757; Wickersham 6822-23. Three volumes in two, quarto (246 x 193mm). Frontispiece, title pages with engraved vignettes, 23 engraved plates, 2 engraved folding maps (some browning and occasional spotting). Contemporary calf (rebacked). Provenance : George Soaper (c.1774-1848, bibliophile and collector; bookplate) – Ernest Richard Orlando Bridgeman (1851-c.1931; Rector of Blymhill; bookplate) – Explorer Books.
