Condition : heavily foxed, staining to the preliminary and terminal leaves, short tear to title, other faults; worn, crudely rebacked. Provenance : Charles Dingee (signature on title) This work includes many of the documents and petitions relating to the imprisonment of the Virginia Exiles. Charles Dingee, the original owner of this work, was a member of the Philadelphia Society of Friends and was among 113 who signed a 5 September 1777 petition to the President and Council of Pennsylvania seeking the release of the Virginia Exiles. Interestingly, he suffered a similar fate himself. In January 1778, Dingee was arrested for attempting to enter occupied Philadelphia without having sworn an oath of allegiance to the united colonies (see the “Minutes of the Supreme Executive Council” in Colonial Records of Pennsylvania, p. 402).
