FIRST EDITION. Peignot distinguishes between parchment (made from lamb, sheep, cow or goatskin) and vellum (made from young or unborn calfskin), and treats their history as writing and printing surface, as well as binding material. The paper issue was limited to 250 copies, THE VELLUM ISSUE TO ONLY TWO COPIES. Since the other vellum copy was retained by the publisher Renouard for his own collection (see his 1819 private-library catalogue, vol. IV, p. 215), this one presumably belonged to Peignot. Van Praet, Vélins de Bibliothéques IV, 102.177.
