PEIGNOT, Gabriel (1767-1849). Dictionnaire critique, littéraire et bibliographique des principaux livres condamnés au feu, supprimés ou censurés . Paris: Antoine-Augustin Renouard, 1806. 8 o (219 x 123 mm), 2 volumes bound in one. CONTEMPORARY PARISIAN BINDING BY COURTEVAL: gold-tooled straight-grained red morocco, covers panelled with fillets and a floral rolls, compartments of spine densely decorated with small tools and lettered, roll-tooled turn-ins, light-blue silk liners with the same roll as the covers, gilt edges, binder's ticket. Provenance : Sir Robert Abdy (bookplate) -- Claude Guérin. FIRST EDITION of Peignot's historical bibliography of forbidden books. Peignot was the most prolific bibliographer of his time and with Nodier the ultimate arbitrator of bibliophilic taste in France. He and Renouard were Bernard Breslauer's true forerunners in their passion for exceptional copies of bibliographies and catalogues. Courteval, who was responsible for the handsome and strictly contemporary binding on this Peignot, was known among the Parisian binding fraternity as "le plus grand des fous" for working alone, doing all forwarding, finishing, gauffering, etc. himself. His unceasing activity spanned the years 1796-1836 (see Devauchelle II, 119). BBB Harvard 66.
