Frontispiece by Charles Dana Gibson photo illustrations throughout. Original illustrated boards backed with maroon cloth. Leaves a bit toned but internally clean, boards soiled and worn at corners and edges, spine weak, hinges reinforced. WITH: A vintage baseball uniform, c.1920, including button-down jersey, pants and cap, gray with blue pinstripes, lettered "D L" on the front of the jersey, made by Goldsmith (Cincinnati, Ohio), dirt-soiled but in excellent condition. FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE EARLIEST HISTORIES OF BASEBALL. Profusely illustrated with photos of early figures in the game. Chapters on the National and American Leagues and earlier rivals to the former; the art of pitching; star plays and players; "the troubles of an umpire;" etc. The lot includes a vintage baseball uniform of an unidentified team. The gray with blue pinstripe uniform bears the letters "BL" on the jersey, and was manufactured by Goldsmith of Cincinnati, who also manufactured the uniforms for the Cincinnati Reds. Goldsmith was established in 1875, and its name stopped appearing on tags after 1952, following a merger with McGregor.
