Written as part of Pasteur's geological and biological studies at the Ecole Normale in Paris, which he attended from 1843-1846: 'La période Jurassique comprend 4 étages principaux ... A partir du Lias le caractère minéralogique des dépôts de sédiment diffère en général de celui des dépôts que nous avons examinés jusqu'ici. Les matières arénacées dominaient et dès le lias au lieu de matières arénacées on ne voit guères que des matières fines, argileuses alternant avec des calcaires coquillers. Autrefois encore les calcaires coquilliers.' The manuscript includes a synopsis of the 'Terrains Jurassiques' and 'Terrains Jurassiques Métamorphosés', mentioning particularly the discoveries of William Buckland and Elie de Beaumont There are many references to findings in Oxfordshire and at Kimmeridge in Dorset. Pasteur himself was born at Dole in the Jura, where the term 'Jurassic' was first used by Von Humboldt for the rocks of this age.
