Parma: Stampería di S.A.S., 1729. 4 o (223 x 170 mm). 4 engraved folding plates by GIUSEPPE PINI and JACOPO VEZZANI after PAOLO FONTESANI, PIETRO RIGHINI ILARIO SPOLVERINI and GIOVANNI BATTISTA NATALI Later calf by C. Kalthoeber (some rubbing). Provenance : armorial bookplate with motto "Deo et Regi" on front pastedown. In celebration of the wedding between ANTONIO FARNESE (1679-1731), Duke of Parma and Piacenza, and ENRICHETTA D'ESTE of Modena (1702-1777) in 1728, the city of Parma staged a spectacular series of events that included an equestrian ballet. Performed at the famous Teatro Farnese, the operatic piece, written by Frugoni and composed by LEONARDO VINCI, began with an idyll between Neptune and Amphitrite in which the two deities expressed boundless confidence in the continuation of the Farnese line. This interlude was followed by an equestrian ballet executed by sixteen young pupils from the College of Nobles. It was recorded that the Teatro Farnese was so crowded on this occasion that no room could be found for the Bishops of Parma, Piacenza and Borgo San Donnino, who had all presumably travelled from their dioceses to see the show. The engraved plates illustrate the stage of the theater, the set decorations for the idyll designed by PIETRO RIGHINI the plan of the horse formation on the stage, and two carriages decorated with shells, coral, fish, and other aquatic life to carry Neptune and Amphitrite. Watanabe 1129.
