PARIS 1610 -- [PRINT]. Pompa funeralli fatte in Pariggi nella morte dell' Invit. m o Henrico IIII. Re di Francia et Navarra . [Venice]: Francisco Vallegio and Catarin Doini, ca 1610.
PARIS 1610 -- [PRINT]. Pompa funeralli fatte in Pariggi nella morte dell' Invit. m o Henrico IIII. Re di Francia et Navarra . [Venice]: Francisco Vallegio and Catarin Doini, ca 1610. Panoramic engraving, with title panel at right, and eight engravings on joined sheets forming a scroll, 8¼ x 173 in. (210 x 4400 mm). (Some soiling and fraying at edges, a few holes, several affecting small portions of image). An extremely detailed and extensive panoramic view of the funeral procession in Paris for HENRY IV (1553-1610), who died in Paris on 10 May 1610. Within it is a group of prelates coming between the Master of the Horse (holding a sword and the effigy), which was a cause célèbre at the time. This was the last occasion upon which an effigy was used--after an argument ensued about the meaning of the separation of the effigy from the body. The Bishop of Paris and the Bishop of Angiers tried to march near the effigy and "to mix themselves, even though they wore mourning, with the members of Parlement who were in red robes." The bishops claimed to have the approval of the Master of Ceremonies, who was looked down upon by members of Parlement. The debate continued over several days, through consultations of descriptions of earlier processions and precedents, until finally Queen Maria de' Medici issued an order allowing the Bishops to march near the effigy. Tensions persisted once the procession began, with further wranglings between the Bishops and Parlement. See Ralph E. Giesey, The Royal Funeral Ceremony in Renaissance France , Geneva, 1960, pp. 122-24 (ill. Fig. 15).
