PARÉ, Ambroise (1510-1590). The Workes... Translated out of Latine and compared with the French by Thomas Johnson London: Thomas Cotes and R. Young, 1634. 2 o (334 x 210 mm). Engraved title by Thomas Cecill and 323 woodcuts in text. (Lacks "To the Reader" leaf and dedication leaf π1-π2, 4 leaves with margin browned and frayed 4V3-4V4 and 5H5-5H6, some very pale marginal dampstaining and soiling.) Contemporary calf (spine ends repaired, upper joint with 4 in. split). Provenance : Samuel Koslov (his sale Christie's East 13 November 1996, lot 447). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Most of this edition was based on the first Latin edition of 1582 (made from the second edition of the French Oeuvres ). The "Apologie and treatise," however, was translated directly from the French. STC 19189; Norman 1640.
