PALLAS, Peter Simon (1741-1811).] Neue nordische Beyträge. St. Petersburg and Leipzig: Johann Zacharias Logan, 1781-2. First editions from Pallas's important work, “a rich mine of information on the early history of the discovery and settlement of Alaska” (Lada-Mocarski). Pallas, who came to the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences as a professor at the invitation of Catherine the Great, published his "interesting and highly instructive" papers in this series (Lada-Mocarski). There were a total of seven volumes published under this title between 1781 and 1796; see following lot for the final two volumes and lot 44 for offprints from volumes 5-7. Arctic Bib. 13057; Chavanne 163; Lada-Mocarski 31; Wickersham 5806. Volumes I-III (only, of 7), octavo (vols 1 and 2: 222 x 131mm; volume 3: 197 x 118mm). 10 engraved plates, 3 engraved maps, some of which handcolored (marginal dampstain affecting some leaves of vol. 2). Modern half calf over marbled boards; vols 1 and 2 with deckle edges, vol. 3 with red edges (boards perhaps retained from an earlier binding); slipcase. Provenance : Großherzogliche Bibliothek Neustrelitz (stamps in vols. 1-2) – Wayfarer's Bookshop.
