Painted Wooden Model of the Ship Grand Turk, America, late 19th/early 20th century, a three-masted vessel with carved wooden details, painted black and white, and green below the waterline, the stern inscribed "GRAND TURK SALEM," mounted on a wooden stand, (imperfections), total ht. 45, lg. 49 1/2 in. Note: This vessel was likely modeled after the second of four vessels to bear the name of Grand Turk. Built Salem, Massachusetts, in 1791, measuring 560 tons, she was later sold to Boston interests and traded to India, China, and Russia. In 1797 returning from a long passage from China, she arrived at Portland, Maine, in poor condition, and two weeks later on January 4, 1798, she was ripped from her moorings and wrecked in a gale.
