OVERTON, Thomas Collins (b. 1734). The Temple Builder's Most Useful Companion . London: I. Taylor, 1774.
OVERTON, Thomas Collins (b. 1734). The Temple Builder's Most Useful Companion . London: I. Taylor, 1774. 8° (260 x 175 mm). Frontispiece and 50 engraved plates (one is folding) all engraved by R. Pranker. Original wrappers, uncut, partially unopened (some minor staining); modern quarter morocco folding case. The 50 numbered engraved plates comprising the Temple Builder's Companion show elevations and plans for a series of 18th-century garden "follies," Overton's "designs for small houses, cottages, pavilions, and other garden structures in a Palladian mode, but including battlemented and 'gothick' forms" (Millard, p. 181). The work was first published in 1766 under the title Original Designs for Temples and republished the same year under the current title, as a reduced and less expensive pattern book with an added frontispiece. This is a reissue by I. Taylor, successor to the original publisher Henry Webley, with the same content but excluding the list of subscribers. Millard, British 47 (second edition, note).
