Contemporary salmon calf, elaborately decorated in gilt and blind, covers with outer gilt chain panel and central rectangular panel with gilt floral tools, spine gilt-lettered and decorated, edges gilt, original green printed wrappers bound in (some darkening to spine and edges, some rubbing to extremities). Provenance : Corry Huysinga (signature on flyleaf); purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 28 March 1958. FIRST EDITION. The plates are wonderful representations of Japanese costume, life and culture, depicted in Japanese style. Van Overmeer records the development of the Japanese people, analyzes the complexity of their mythology, and documents the history of the rulers of the country. There are chapters on the geography of the country, sciences, archeology, painting and the drawing, religion, art of war, arms and armaments, flora and fauna, domestic life and costume, trades, buildings, and boats.
