Jack Katz, the artist behind this "pot head" scenario, was one of the few pre-Code artists to successfully make the transition to the Underground comix scene years later. After abandoning comics in 1955, Katz discovered the Underground scene when he moved to California in the early 1970s. Intrigued by the possibility of creating his own comics without editorial interference, he began work on The First Kingdom, a 24-issue, 768-page graphic novel that took him 12 years to complete.
