A.-A. RENOUARD'S COPY, bound in at end is his four-page manuscript list in his hand of almost one hundred lots acquired by him for 19,820 frs, of a total of 115,006 frs, and an autograph letter signed by Ourches to Renouard, Metz, 20 October 1814 (1 page, 8vo) concerning a Terence edition (Strassburg, Mentelin, ca 1470, lot 835, 700 frs?) which Renouard had bought from Brunet after the sale for 800 frs and sold to Earl Spencer for 1,600 frs; Spencer had asked for a reduction of 800 frs (the reason unknown), but Ourches tells Renouard to have it returned and that Brunet would repay him his 800 frs. Little is known of Ourches, though his collection was extraordinary: his early printed books included the Gutenberg Bible (lot 3, 1,901 frs), the Catholicon , 1460 (1,599 frs. 9s), and vellum copies of the Durandus, 1459, the 1462 Bible, and Cicero, Officia , 1466 (2,101, 2,101 and 651 frs); the block book St. John realized 661 frs. The catalogue was the first which Jacques-Charles-Brunet compiled, in partnership with his father, Thomas. Of the twenty large-paper copies, three were issued with Ourches' name printed on the title, for his personal use. Renouard's copy, originally in the original boards, was bound by Belz for a later owner; it is complete, with the Continuation , usually lacking (see R.E. Stoddard, in The Book Collector , 1993).
