OTWAY, Thomas (1652-1685). The Orphan: or The Unhappy-Marriage. A Tragedy . London: R. Bentley and M. Magnes, 1680. In verse. (A few headlines shaved, small burn-hole in H4 affecting two letters on recto, old stains and soil marks.) FIRST EDITION of this domestic drama set in Bohemia, based on a tale by Roger Boyle, earl of Orrery. Elizabeth Barry achieved lasting fame in the role of Monimia, and the play’s popularity was such that some ninety editions had been published by the close of the 18th century. Wing O-552. In a collection of 47 bound plays in English by Thomas D’Urfey, Thomas Shadwell, John Crone, Elkanah Settle, Otway, Nathaniel Lee, and others, 1669 to 1699, 4 volumes, 4° (208 x 152mm). (11 of the 47 known to be imperfect.) Uniform late 18th-century tree calf. Provenance : Jane Londonderry (bookplate).
