Ottoman Muraqqa' (calligraphic album) with twenty six leaves, in Arabic, manuscript on paper [Ottoman Turkey, c.1830 AD.] 26 leaves mounted on concertina-folded card, on pink, yellow or green paper, single text lines at top and bottom with two double-column lines between them, in bold black naskh, a few scattered ink stains and smudges, a few spots, some folios with repairs to margins (rarely affecting text), 272 by 160mm (each leaf 225 by 120mm.); modern buckram over boards Muraqqa albums contain specimens of calligraphy and miniature drawings compiled by the collector according to their own personal taste. Individual leaves were often gifted to Sultans and noblemen by calligraphers, who also copied entire albums themselves to showcase their artistic ability. Although Muraqqa's are often highly decorative items, the present album, though executed in a competent hand, is very aesthetically pure and removed from any additional decorations. The calligraphy is presented on coloured paper and otherwise completely removed from any distracting additions, thus presenting the real object of beauty as the calligraphy itself.
