First edition, a presentation copy from Ortelius to his friend Jean Vivien, humanist, merchant and collector of antiquities from Valenciennes, who went on an archaeological tour of the southern Netherlands with Ortelius, published as Itinerarium per nonnullas Galliae Belgicae partes (Plantin, 1584). Ortelius had a fine collection of antique coins which provided the images of the gods and goddesses.
Ortelius also presented copies of this 1573 edition to Frédéric Perrenot, Joannes Castelius (Jan van de Casteels, ca 1521-1581 or 1584, a humanist scholar from Bruges, some of whose works were printed by Plantin), and to Jan Moretus.
Vico's work on coins and medals was first printed in 1555 (Mortimer, Harvard Italian 531). On page 16 he includes a list of contemporary collectors of coins and medals, mostly Venetian, including Antonio Zantani (see lots 662-664), Antonio Manutio, himself, Pietro Bembo and Torquato Bembo

Vico: Italic type, 37 lines plus headline. collation: *4 A-P4: 64 leaves. Title with large woodcut printer's device (slightly shaved at foot), engraved portrait of Cosimo de' Medici, woodcut initials, head- and tailpieces, final leaf with woodcut device (otherwise blank).
binding: Contemporary Flemish calf gilt (200 x 143 mm), gilt arabesque centrepiece with corner fleurons, spine with small gilt flower stamp, coloured edges (faded from purple?). (Binding slightly rubbed, rebacked retaining original spine.)
