(16¾ x 11 9/16 in.), modern vellum over pasteboard, modern linen folding case; title worn and soiled, with a few small abraded spots to engraved surface, lower margin renewed, and old repairs to gutter and fore-margin, preliminary leaf A6 supplied from another copy, the World map probably supplied from a copy of the 1579 edition (see below), 6 maps (nos. 5, 7, 11-13 and 18) split along center folds, 6 other maps (including World) with short fold breaks, 5 maps (nos. 7, 35, 37, 41 and 44) with short tears entering or within platemarks, scattered old marginal repairs, map 41 with large abraded spot to triton touched up in ink, map 49 with slight damage to cartouche figures from acidic colored ink, maps 41 and 44 with vertical creases along guards, 5 maps (44, 58, 61, 62 and 65) with small cut-out coats-of-arms (some partly manuscript) pasted onto engraved surface, 6 lines of descriptive text to map 44 blacked out in ink, map 60 with ink inscription on the northern land mass, severe browning to maps 2-9, 11-16, and 44, a few other maps slightly darkened, occasional minor marginal dampstaining . Fifth Latin edition, engraved architectural title, Catalogus Auctorum with 106 names, 70 mapsheets containing 91 maps, the World map in Shirley's first plate, second state, with the crack in lower left corner roughly mended and cloud border reworked (Shirley 122, dating this state to 1579), title and maps fully colored (contemporary coloring with some later additional coloring). Partially colored armorial engravings pasted down on versos of three maps: Map 17: large 18th-century engraving of Hapsburg eagle with portrait of Archduke Leopold II at center and armorial shields of his dependencies. Map 23: portrait of Liedekerke, Bourse and Rouck, by Peeter Baltens after J. Wiericx, dated Antwerp 1579 (Hollstein I:23; M. Mauquoy-Hendrickx, Les Estampes des Wiericx conservées au Cabinet des estampes de la Bibliothèque Royale [Brussels 1982], III:1780). Map 25: arms of Denmark and Norway on architectural edifice, probably part of "The Achievements of Frederic II, King of Denmark", 16 pl. by Frans Hogenberg and Simon Novellanus, Hollstein IX:60-75; map 25 also with arms of Denmark (mostly manuscript) pasted down in map margin. Provenance : Numerous eighteenth-century annotations, full manuscript index in the same hand on lower flyleaf, added armorial engravings as described above, old ink inscription "1570" at top of title and small armorial shields in ink at bottom.
