ORTELIUS, ABRAHAM. Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Antwerp: Coppens Diesth, 1574. Folio, 430 x 295mm. (16 15/16 x 11 5/8 in.), nineteenth-century quarter calf and marbled paper over pasteboards, smooth spine with blind-embossed floral ornamentation, blue-sprinkled edges, extremities abraded, inner hinges split, guards renewed, maps 10, 34 and 66 each with a repaired internal tear, fold breaks to 4 maps (43, 44, 53, 61), 11 maps with short tears or small holes due to acidic green pigment, small abrasions along gutters of maps 68 and 69, offsetting of green pigments affecting most of the maps, a few severely discolored . Engraved title with 16-line epigram on verso, Catalogus Auctorum with 103 names, errata on verso of map 70, 70 engraved mapsheets, THE TITLE, MAPS AND OPENING INITIAL FULLY COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND, the title lettered in gold and with gold highlighting. Koeman III, Ort 14. A tall copy of the fourth Latin edition of the "world's first regularly produced atlas", containing 17 more maps than the first edition of 1570. Provenance : Nineteenth-century shelfmark inscribed on front pastedown -- Frederick H. Rindge (1857-1905).
