ORTELIUS, Abraham (1527-1598). Theatrum orbis terrarum. – Parergon. – Nomenclator ptolemaicus . [Antwerp: Plantin Press,] 1595. 3 parts in one volume, 2° (460 x 300mm). Latin text. Engraved allegorical title coloured by an early hand, uncoloured full-page engraved portrait of Ortelius, woodcut architectural border to Parergon title, large Plantin device on Nomenclator title, 145 (of 147) engraved maps, including 32 in the Parergon , all on guards, most double-page. (Lacking map nos. 56 of Brandenburg and 71 of Italy, world map with large repaired tears to southern continent and at gutter at top margin, map 33 with repaired tear to verso without loss, map 145 of the Roman Empire with large tear but with only very minor loss, a couple of maps with very minor marginal nicks, light soiling and browning, mainly confined to margins.) Late 18th-/early 19th-century boards, orange glazed-paper gilt spine label (worn, sometime recased with later endpapers). Provenance : occasional ink marginalia in an early hand — Maria Antonia, Princess of Bavaria, Electress of Saxony (1724-1780; crowned cipher stamp in margin of title and Nomenclator title) — Saxon State and University Library, Dresden (deaccession stamp). Only 500 copies were printed of this 1595 edition of Ortelius's landmark atlas. The maps and plates in the Parergon may be considered 'the most outstanding engravings depicting the wide-spread interest in classical geography in the 16th century' (Van der Krogt).
