A fine pair of early maps of Asia by Ortelius and Hondius (after Mercator). Ortelius, the 'father of modern geography', first issued his Asia map in his atlas of 1570. Much of the information is drawn from Gerhard Mercator's 1561 world map and from Portuguese sources. At a time when information was fragmentary the map is a fine attempt to collate available sources, Sumatra and Java are distorted, and Borneo and Philippines are beginning to emerge. Hondius's fine map of South East Asia follows Bartholomeo Lasso's form and was first included in the enlarged edition of Mercator's atlas of 1606. Curiously he notes the landfall of Sir Francis Drake on the southern coast of Java. (2)
