ORIGINAL YANKEES LINEUP CARD FROM FIRST GAME OF THE 1951 WORLD SERIES (MANTLE'S FIRST/DIMAGGIO'S LAST WORLD SERIES) The 1951 season witnessed the passing of the torch from one Yankees Hall of Fame center fielder to another. For this year alone Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle patrolled the environs of the outfield of Yankee Stadium together. DiMaggio played his last season and World Series, while Mantle experienced his first. In all, DiMaggio made appearances in 11 World Series, while Mickey would participate in 12. Originating directly from the Yankee Stadium dugout from the first game in this historic Fall Classic, is the original lineup card executed and utilized by Yankees manager Casey Stengel. DiMaggio's name was applied to the clean-up slot in the line-up, as he laced up his cleats for one final championship run. The speedy Oklahoma rookie, who was poised to rewrite the World Series home run record, found himself appointed as the lead-off man. The card is filled out entirely in Stengel's hand, his final approval evidenced by his last name signature 'Stengel' in the lower right comer. The batting order, cross referenced with the Yankees roster, makes this easily identifiable and unique to Game 1 of the 1951 Series. Additionally, a small period notation in an unknown hand identifies it as such. As was not uncommon, Stengel used a card marked '1950' leftover from the previous year. The Yankees opponents, the surprising National League Champion Giants, featured a promising rookie centerfielder of their own, adding to the match-up's intrigue. Willie Mays had been called up in late May by the Giants from their Minneapolis team (where he was batting .477) and the twenty-year old had responded with twenty homers. It was only fitting that in their first year of professional play, both future Hall of Famers found themselves competing against one another and making their World Series debuts simultaneously in 1951. Though the Giants would win game one, they were only bit players in the drama of the transposition of the scepter from the Clipper to the Mick. Their lone season together would culminate appropriately in a Yankees World Championship. The line-up card is framed together with a photo of DiMaggio and Mantle together in 1951 as well as a ticket stub from that same game. Line-up card measures 4" by 5". Excellent condition. Ticket stub; EX condition. LOAs from PSA/DNA and JSA.
