Original TALES OF SUSPENSE No. 30 Cover Recreation Painted by Cyril Jordan Author: [Original Comic Art] Jordan, Cyril Date Published: c. 2000s Description: Painted by Cyril Jordan in hand-mixed fluorescent paints, image area 8x11" with black border on 11x14" stretched canvas, signed "Jordan" in the bottom right margin. Excellent condition. "Everybody wants to bum a ride on the rock 'n roller-coaster / And we went out and got our name in small print on the poster." — The Clash, All the Young Punks. Cyril Jordan's recreation of the cover to Tales of Suspense #30 manages to capture the spirt of Jack Kirby, as well as the dizzy, dangerous kicks of the rock 'n roll thrill-ride that Cyril took in the '60s and '70s as lead guitarist for the brilliant but criminally-underrated Flamin' Groovies. The Pitchfork music blog memorably summed up the Groovies' ethos in a 2004 review, in language that evokes the "Pre-Code meets the Underground" sensibility that informs Cyril's artistic worldview: "Before The Flamin' Groovies became the perpetually struggling epitome of brawling, tuned-out rock 'n' roll songwriting supremacy, they were just perpetually struggling teenage rockers in a world that had suddenly gone all mod again. In the late 60s, [the] Groovies were fending for life amidst the roving psychopaths, hallucinations, and trampled corpses of San Francisco. When the more popular drugs made you whisper to invisible snow-queens and crumple into fetus-like stupors for days on end, there was no place for California's loneliest Elvis-loving, hormone-injected, primordial punk freaks."
