Title: Original printed and hand-written membership certificate from the Machrihanish Golf Club Author: Place: Campbeltown Publisher: Date: March 26, 1889 Description: Framed membership certificate, printed with hand-writing. 8x20 cm (3x8"). Issued to Lt. Col. A.F. Mackay (full name A. Forbes, of Edinburgh). Signed by the Honorary Treasurer, A.H. Duncan. Mackay paid ten shillings for membership. House in a later gold frame, ready for display. Rare membership certificate issued to Lieutenant Colonol A. Forbes Mackaey (who is listed on 1895-96 membership directory broadside, also offered in this auction). A great early item of ephemera from this premier golf club, which officially opened in 1876 on land that Tom Morris deemed designed by God for golf. David Colville and his two friends carved out each hole, and played each hole, all in one day, likely without official permission to do so. Nonetheless, the course became a popular one, and attracted the attention of Old Tom Morris, who in 1879 played a pivotal role during the expansion from 12 holes to 18. Lot Amendments Condition: Not inspected outside of frame, but appears near fine. Item number: 255062
