Title: Original bifolium from the Kelmscott printing of the Canterbury Tales Author: Chaucer, Geoffrey Place: Hammersmith Publisher: Kelmscott Press Date: 1896 Description: 4-page conjugate leaf, pp. 211/212 & 221/[222]. The final page with large woodcut illustrations and elaborate woodcut border; 3 large and 14 small woodcut initials. 425x29.3 cm. (16¾x11½"). Attractive bifolium from the masterwork of the Kelmscott Press, the Canterbury Tales, a sought-after example, with woodcut illustration by Edward Burne-Jones Contains three pages from the "Persouns" tale as well as the final leaf of the "Tales of Caunterbury". In minuscule manuscript at the foot of the last page an inscription reads: "Given by Wm. Morris to the Board of Education. March, 1901." Lot Amendments Condition: Untrimmed, pin-holes at corners, lower corner of second leaf chipped (without loss to text or illustration), evidence of prior matting/framing including darkening to margins and matting tape in upper margin on inside pages; very good.
