A work accompanied by an interesting iconographic apparatus with litographic plates finished with vivid and strong handcolouring and brushed with gum arabic. The illustrations depict scenes of the mid-19th-century of battles in land and sea along with two maps and portraits of the generals. Folio (350 x 268mm). Allegorical frontispiece with Napoleon III and Sultan Abdul-Medjid in front of the coast of Crimea, 50 lithographic plates, in contemporary handcolouring, brushed with gum arabic and protected by tissue paper, including portraits of the commanders of the various field armies and two maps (without final appendix as most copies, some foxing and occasional browning). Contemporary half calf, blue endpapers, spine and covers decorated in gilt (rubbed).
