Rare ephemera from the California Wine Association, with printed signature of E.S. Pillsbury, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Association, approving the chart. The California Wine Association was founded in 1894, as seven leading wine firm joined together in an attempt to secure favorable options from grape growers and winemakers, and to raise prices and stimulate trade. Despite early factional disputes within the organization, the association was able to stabilize the market and the quality of California wine, and eventually came to control over eighty percent of wine manufactured in the state. Evans S. Pillsbury, Chairman of Executive Committee, was a noted San Francisco attorney, founder of the Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro law firm, which represented the California Wine Association. In 1906 PMS won a landmark case while representing the California Wine Association, forcing fire insurance companies to pay for fire damage from the devastating earthquake and fire.
