Title: Open Golf Championship, Third and Fourth Rounds, Official Programme for Friday, 5th July 1946 Author: Place: St. Andrews Publisher: The Royal & Ancient Golf Club Date: 1946 Description: [24] pp. Illustrated with photographs, advertisements, and a drawing of the course. 24.5x15 cm. (9½x6"), original saddle-stitched blue wrappers, printed in black. The first and the rarest post-war British Open program. Won by the American Sam Snead, who shot 74 and 75 on this day. Snead beat both Bobby Locke, and Johnny Bulla both by four shots. The prize money awarded to Snead was 1,000 pounds. When asked if he would return to England to play again, he said no because it cost him more than the prize money to travel to England. The program begins with the rules for spectators, printed on the inside front cover, then continues with 8 pp. of advertisements. An article written by F.J.C. Pignon, plus starting times follows that. There are some pencil notes on the starting times pages. On inside rear cover is printed a thank you from the British Legion, as the funds from the purchase of these programs were donated to the St. Andrews Branch of the British Legion (Scotland). A very rare program, only the second time offered by PBA Galleries but the same copy so still the only copy we have seen. Provenance: From the collection of Joseph P. Garrity. Lot Amendments Condition: Some light creasing, including a faint horizontal crease at center; scattered light foxing, some tiny nicks at edges of some pages; very good. Item number: 267602
