New for 1959, the Galaxie began life as a style variation of the hugely successful Fairlane that had debuted in 1955 as rival to Chevrolet’s Bel Air. In creating one of its most iconic models, Ford’s stylists hit upon to the simple yet inspired idea of grafting the Thunderbird top on to the Fairlane body. The result was one of the most memorable automobiles ever to come out of Dearborn and the Galaxie was an instant hit, gaining an award of a Gold Medal for Exceptional Styling at the Brussels World’s Fair. Named after the 500-mile NASCAR races in which it was so successful, the Galaxie 500XL was a new introduction for 1962 and, as befitted Ford’s top-of-the-range performance model, came with bucket seats, floor-mounted shifter and sports interior. Engines up to 425bhp were available and the lengthy options list included a four-speed manual transmission. The ‘XL’ continued as the top Galaxie sports model through the major re-design of 1965 and subsequent makeovers, forming part of the series until the end of the 1970 model year when the ‘XL’ designation was dropped. This unrestored Galaxie XL has the 302cu in two-barrel V8 engine producing 250bhp, and is finished in white with black vinyl top and matching interior. A one-owner car, it displays a total of 88,000 miles on the odometer and comes with window sticker, original sales invoice and owner’s manual. Proceeds from the sale of this lot go to the Petersen Automotive Museum. Without Reserve
