When it was introduced in mid-2006 the 2007 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 was the most powerful factory built Mustang in history. Its 450 supercharged horsepower (remember, these days we’re talking “net” horsepower, not the gross numbers of the late 60’s and early 70’s) makes the Mach 1 SCJ and Boss ‘Nine pale by comparison. It got its “Shelby” moniker the old fashioned way, by involving Carroll Shelby in the process of specification and design, just like the last of the Shelby Mustangs – including the famous KR – did. Its specifications are ominous. Inside the 5.4 liter, 32-valve iron block V-8 are specially calibrated camshafts. The block is topped with the GT’s aluminum heads, then a special low profile aluminum intake manifold force fed at a maximum of 8.5psi (.58 atmospheres) boost from a positive displacement Eaton R122 Roots-type supercharger with a water-to-air intercooler. The result is over 500 brake horsepower at 6,000rpm with 480lb-ft torque at 4,500 rpm A Tremec T-56 six-speed transmission hooked up by a twin disc Valeo clutch was the driver’s only choice to handle the power of this brute, but it’s what’s at the back of the car that is more interesting. Ford’s Special Vehicle Team, SVT, went old-school, returning to the tried-and-true live rear axle setup employed so successfully on the spec-racer Mustang FR500C series including positive three-link (Panhard rod and trailing arms) location and coil springs. Unlike its predecessors among Ford’s high performance Mustangs the ’07 Shelby GT500 is equipped with just about every comfort, convenience and luxury available including power rack and pinion steering, power assisted 4-wheel disc brakes, power windows, power locks, air conditioning and a 6-disc CD changer stereo with factory subwoofer. The Shelby GT500 includes special front and rear panels including an extractor scoop on the hood needed to clear the blower and a reshaped rear panel that sure looks like it’s 1969 all over again. That’s a serious driver’s package and the Shelby GT500 was received enthusiastically when it was introduced. Reggie Jackson is an even more serious driver, though, and this 1,800 mile ’07 Mustang Shelby GT500 has been upgraded with Eibach springs that lowered it another inch and a half, polyurethane bushings, bigger sway bars and a Magnaflow exhaust for even better performance and attention-getting sound. The massive brakes with 4-piston Brembo front calipers and 14” rotors and 4-piston rear calipers squeezing 11.8” rotors have been retained. It has 18x 9 1/2” SVT wheels with 285/40ZR18 rear and 255/45ZR18 front Goodyear Eagle F1 tires Finished in Vista Blue with a pair of white racing stripes and luxuriously trimmed throughout the interior in black leather, this is a rare and highly desirable example of Ford’s renewed alliance with Carroll Shelby. It has the power and handling to back up its retro design cues and has been further personalized by Reggie Jackson to retain its classic Shelby Mustang look while being just a little bit better than any of its counterparts. This is a real car guy’s car, with history, performance, style, presence and unmatched Reggie Jackson provenance.
