This sumptuous Silver Cloud III convertible, one of 49 produced with left-hand drive, was first owned by the proprietor of a prominent menswear store chain. Originally delivered in Europe, the car was kept in Northern California after its first year of ownership. The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud dates to 1955, with the first series of the new 123-inch wheelbase models utilizing a traditional Rolls-Royce six-cylinder engine. V-8 power arrived in 1959 with the Silver Cloud II, which in turn was superseded by the mildly updated Silver Cloud III during 1962. Rolls-Royce carried over the aluminum 6.2L V-8 engine first seen in the Silver Cloud II for the Silver Cloud III. However, the fitting of twin SU carburetors to the newer model's engine boosted output to approximately 220 horsepower. (R-R routinely did not advertise horsepower ratings.) The Silver Cloud III enjoyed relatively stellar success for a Rolls-Royce line—total production between 1962 and 1966 being 2,376. However, the considerable premium ascribed to the series' Convertible styles ensured their ultra-exclusivity—all the more so those that were coachbuilt to custom order in the grand tradition of such fine cars. Mulliner Park Ward, the in-house Rolls-Royce coachbuilding operation crafted the svelte drop-head offered here. Cataloged as style No. 2045, the design represented a complete break with the conservative styling of earlier Silver Cloud open models. The well- proportioned slab-sided 'drop-head coupe' body, with its suggestion of tail fins, triple taillights, and canted quad headlamps, gave this Rolls-Royce a refreshingly modern and sporting air. The Silver Cloud III was the final Rolls-Royce built in the traditional body-on-chassis manner—it was succeeded for 1967 by the unibodied Silver Shadow. Being one of the later Silver Cloud III Convertibles, the offered car boasts the most advanced conveniences to be found in that series' esteemed and admired lineage, including power steering that provided greater assist than that of prior models. Never restored, this Silver Cloud III Convertible's impressive condition supports an assertion that it has been serviced and properly cared for since new. The car has covered less than 1,000 miles since a major servicing, performed at a cost of $5,500, this past February and is characterized by the vendor to be a superb automobile in every respect.
